Jared Petrenko has been ruled out of Saturday’s match against Richmond with a shoulder injury.
Petrenko sustained a grade one sprain of his right AC joint in a heavy collision with Sydney ruckman Shane Mumford on Saturday. Mumford, who suffered a fractured cheekbone, was also injured in the clash. Coach Brenton Sanderson was optimistic Petrenko would only miss one game, with Adelaide scheduled to have a bye next weekend.
“He (Petrenko) won’t play this week. The bye will come at a good time for him. It’s probably a 2-3 week injury,” Sanderson said on Wednesday.
The news was better for David Mackay (hip) and Luke Brown (calf). Both players missed the loss to Sydney with minor injuries, but will line-up against Richmond at the MCG on Saturday. Forward Tom Lynch is also available despite sporting a moon boot to protect a sore toe at training on Tuesday.
“Brown and Mackay will certainly come back into the side. It’ll be good to have those two guys back because they’ve been good players for us,” Sanderson said.
“Lynchy is fine. He had a moon boot on yesterday and got teased by his teammates and coaches. It was a very minor issue with his foot … it was a precaution to put the moon boot on.”
Ruckman Sam Jacobs (corked thigh) and forward Josh Jenkins have also been given the all clear.
“Jenkins is fine from a collision with one of the coaches yesterday and Jacobs is okay too,” Sanderson said.
“A few guys are still a bit sore from the game. Scott Thompson got through with a corked thigh, but had a bit of an issue with an adductor. He trained today and it looks like he’ll be fine. It’s just getting to that time of year where players are starting to develop sore spots here and there.”
Sanderson said there were also likely to be changes to the team based on form.
“We haven’t had match committee yet, but a few guys have been down for too many weeks,” he said.
“When you have a 77-point loss at home, you have to make changes. You can’t just say, ‘we forgive you and let’s get on with it’. There has to be some adjustments.
“We need to bring in hungry players – there has been some good form in the SANFL and some guys will get an opportunity this week.”
The coach also confirmed last week’s substitute Jason Porplyzia would retain his spot in the 22.
“Porplyzia will certainly play. I thought he was good when he came on as the sub last week. He was one player who gave us a bit of energy in the second half.”
