Crows veteran Michael Doughty has announced this season will be his last.

The oldest player on Adelaide’s list, Doughty told teammates of his plans to retire at the end of Club’s 2012 campaign on Wednesday.

The 33-year-old has played 226 games for the Crows - ranked eighth of all-time - since making his debut against Hawthorn in round six, 2000. He became only the ninth Crow to reach 200 games in round 16 last season. He’s also kicked 46 career goals.

Coach Brenton Sanderson praised Doughty as being a ‘selfless’ player.

“Dogga has been a great Club man throughout his career,” Sanderson said.

“He is the typical back-pocket, who puts the team before the individual. His ability to mentor those who will eventually take his place in the side is testament to his character.

“While I have coached him for only one season he has quickly become a player I can rely on.

“He will certainly be difficult to replace.”

Recruited from South Adelaide, Doughty joined the Crows as a rookie at the end of 1999.

He established himself in the team in 2004 and has since played a variety of roles in his 13-year career, as a wingman, negating midfielder and most recently a small defender.

A respected player and teammate, Doughty has previously been a member of Adelaide’s leadership group. He chose to step down from an official role within the playing group at the start of this season.

He finished third in the Crows Club Champion award in 2010, and received the Best Team Man award in 2011 and 2008.
