The Adelaide Football Club congratulates Narelle Smith, who has been reappointed as South Australia’s women’s state coach.
Smith, who has helped guide Adelaide’s women’s talent trials at the Club’s West Lakes headquarters in recent weeks, will continue in the senior coaching role for a fourth year. The experienced female football identity led SA to victory against the Northern Territory in her most recent campaign with the Croweaters.
A six-time premiership player in her own right, Smith was an assistant coach with Melbourne’s women’s team last year and became the first female to join the SANFL’s coaching ranks when she was appointed as Glenelg’s reserves coach for the upcoming season.
As part of her commitment in accepting the role, Smith will step down from her post on Adelaide's women’s football advisory committee.
SANFL Female Football Coordinator Emma Gibson said the 2014 Honorary Football Woman of the Year was the outstanding candidate.
‘’We had a really strong pool of candidates for the role this year,’’ Gibson said on the SANFL website.
‘’So for Narelle to earn the top job, it really does speak highly of her credentials and the experience she possesses.
‘’She’s coming off a successful year last year and is already thriving at Glenelg so it is great to have someone gaining great knowledge from a SANFL club.
‘’The most beneficial for her has been her involvement in the AFL environment, in her position with Melbourne, it has really exposed her to what is required at the elite level.’’
Smith will take charge of South Australia against New South Wales’ women’s team before Adelaide’s Round 11 clash with St Kilda at Adelaide Oval.
