Adelaide utility Isaac Cumming reveals the consistent message from Senior Coach Matthew Nicks that’s sticking with him, as he looks towards a potential Club debut this weekend.

Cumming arrived at the Crows following a trade with GWS in October and hoped to line-up in his first official game in the tri colours against St Kilda this Sunday.

Speaking to the media on Tuesday, Cumming said Nicks had encouraged him to narrow his focus upon becoming a Crow.

“Nicksy’s message from the day I walked through the door was ‘have a good pre-season and then just get Round One out the way’,” Cumming said.

“If we just tick one box at a time, hopefully at the end of the year it will pay off.

“It’s a cliché but if I’m being honest with you, that’s all we’ve been thinking about and talking about is St Kilda on Sunday.

“I am very excited. It does feel a bit long this week already but it’s good it’s finally here and the countdown is on now for Sunday.”

Cumming said his transition from the Giants to the Crows’ nest had been smooth, despite a minor setback in the form of a pre-Christmas hamstring strain.

“It’s obviously very frustrating to do an injury at any time, but mine was pretty early into my time here, so I was mostly flat about not being able to train with the boys,” Cumming said.

“I was the only one in rehab, which is obviously a good thing, but I was just keen to get to know the boys a bit more, but after Christmas when I was back with them, it was good.

“Feeling at home and happy within the first couple of weeks at the footy club is something I was super appreciative of because I thought something like that would take a bit more time.

“The boys were unreal in terms of welcoming all of us, hopefully all three of us are out there this Sunday and hopefully we can celebrate a win together.”

Adelaide will name its squad for the clash against the Saints on Thursday, before the final team of 23 on Friday afternoon.

Cumming, who hails from Broken Hill, the same town as forward Taylor Walker, says getting a chance to run out alongside the Crows’ all-time leading goal kicker will be “surreal”.

“I know a lot of Broken Hill boys are coming up for it (the game),” Cumming said.

“Any Round One game has a lot of hype around it, everyone is excited, but to think I might be running out there with someone I looked up to from my hometown is going to be pretty special.”

The Crows host St Kilda at Adelaide Oval on Sunday at 12.05pm.
