Brodie Smith has revealed that a mid-season dressing down from his coaches and teammates was the catalyst for his recent impressive form.
On this Sunday’s episode of The Crows Show, we see a more serious side of the dashing defender as he puts aside the jokes and talks about the honest feedback he received.
“Halfway through the year after the Hawthorn game I had some strong feedback from Podsy (James Podsiadly), Pykey (Don Pyke) and the leaders as well that something had to change,” Smith said.
“I do like to muck around and have a good time and I guess the perception was that’s all I like to do.
“I’ve tried to put the humour aside a little bit and really show that driven side of myself and that I want to play team footy.”
The change in focus has really paid off, with Smith back to his All-Australian form of 2014.
He’s averaging an impressive 475.5 metres gained per game this year, with a whopping 772 metres gained in Friday night’s loss to Sydney.
Smith said his attacking game comes as a result of his defensive work.
“That mental shift of really focusing on it and really valuing defence,” Smith said.
“Obviously I like to attack but playing in the backline you’ve got to defend first.”
Also on the show, we hear from Senior Coach Don Pyke ahead of Sunday’s clash against his old side West Coast.
We catch up with Crows legend Tony Modra to relive some of his classic highlights and find out what he’s up to now.
As footy fans say farewell to Subiaco Oval on Sunday, Basil Zempilas and Nat Fyfe take us behind-the-scenes at what will become the new home of sport in Western Australia.
And we crown a winner of the this year’s Toyota 4WD Challenge.
