Bev sings with her 'boys'
Bev Bickley spent Mother's Day 730kms away from her three daughters and four grandchildren but is still buzzing from the experience.
Bev was at Melbourne's Telstra Dome where she enjoyed by what she described as her greatest Mother's Day ever with her mighty Crows after being invited to join the players after the final siren and sing the song.
"They were hot, smelly and sweaty and I loved every bit of it," Bev said. "I replaced my family with 22 footballers and it was the best Mother's Day ever."
Bev (a distant relation to the great Mark Bickley) was on a 'girlie' weekend in Melbourne with her neighbour Sandra, which included lots of shopping, a big win at the Casino and of course a must-see game of football at the Dome.
"It was the only weekend we could see the Crows play in Melbourne as we both work on weekends," 56-year-old Bev, from Craigmore, said.
"I was so excited that the boys had won and I was high-fiving the lads as they walked around the boundary - I thought that was good enough."
But Bev's Mothers Day was about to defy her wildest expectations.
Trent Hentschel approached her and asked if she'd like to come and sing the Crows song with the players. Her reply - "you betcha" - and she had jumped the fence before Crows officials could open a gate for her.
Bev ran straight up to captain Mark Ricciuto for a celebratory hug and then, tucked under his arm, she made her way down to the change rooms.
Watching the television replay it looks like Bev is busy texting on her phone but she says it was a colleague at the Para Hills nursing home where she works as a nurse, ringing to say she was on television.
Bev says all she had time to say was "I'm going to sing the Crows song" before Ricciuto suggested she put her phone away because it could get quite wet down in the change rooms.
Back at the Para Hills Nursing home, all the staff and residents quickly rallied to watch Bev belt it out, snugly tucked between favourite player Andrew McLeod and Ken McGregor.
Also back in Adelaide one of her daughters, Simone, sat dumbstruck watching her animated mum in action. And across the country in Perth, Bev's younger sister Betty had to look twice to make sure she wasn't seeing things.
Bev says Roo introduced her to all the players before the song by saying "This is Bev Bickley and she is going to sing the club song with us. Happy Mother's Day Bev".
Bev says: "Afterwards all the players were coming up to me and hugging me and saying `Happy Mother's Day'.
"It was like I was everyone's mum for the day. They made me feel so very special."
