Adelaide defender Jason Torney is ready to resume playing this week after a delayed start because of a virus and the birth of his second child.

The virus lingered for about a month and caused Torney to lose about two kilograms.

"It was nameless and knocked me around for about a week and a half," he said. "Then I did a bit of training and had a little boy last Friday, so I had another four days off. I was at the hospital. The last two or three weeks are what's kept me back … I'm just trying to work back into it.

"I got through training so I guess at this stage I've put my hand up. Whether I play this week or next, I'm coming good."

Torney, 28, a veteran of 164 AFL matches - 118 with Richmond from 1995-2002 and 46 with Adelaide since 2003 - is expected to be included in the Crows' squad for Saturday's NAB Cup quarter-final against Hawthorn at Launceston's Aurora Stadium.

Asked about the Hawks, he said: "They're always fit and they always go hard at it, and I expect that to be the same. It wasn't a bad game down there last year (Adelaide won by 10 points in round 15) and I just expect the same thing - they're a hard-running side."

On Hawthorn not being at full strength (nor is Adelaide), Torney said: "Yeah, it's funny, though. The younger guys come in and they're that keen and that eager that they put on as good a show as the experienced guys.

"Ideally, you want to be preparing against the best, but you can't underestimate a young guy who's looking for a spot."

Torney and his wife, Jodie, have named their son, Owen. They also have a daughter - Baylee, aged three.
