Crows crush Dogs
Adelaide has halted the Western Bulldogs' four-match winning streak with a runaway 77-point victory at AAMI Stadium on Saturday.
The Crows exerted their dominance with a superb 6.5 to 1.2 first quarter with a stiff south-westerly wind, outscored the Bulldogs 2.4 to 1.4 in the second term and sealed the win with a powerful 12.3 to 5.7 second half.
It was Adelaide's biggest winning margin in 26 matches against the Bulldogs. The previous best was 74 points (24.17 to 5.5) at AAMI Stadium in round 16 last season.
The Bulldogs were the highest-scoring team in the competition while amassing 25.17, 20.17, 15.14 and 14.14 to beat Richmond, Melbourne, Essendon and Geelong - all at Telstra Dome - in the first four rounds this season.
But they struggled to adapt to the softer surface and windy conditions at AAMI Stadium and were comprehensively outplayed by the classy, well-drilled Crows, who have undeniable claims to early premiership favouritism after wins against Collingwood at Telstra Dome, Melbourne at the Gold Coast, Fremantle at Subiaco and the Dogs at home, and a two-point round-two loss to West Coast at home.
Significantly, Adelaide won the centre clearances 18 to 10 and had big winners in midfielders Simon Goodwin, Tyson Edwards, Brent Reilly and Michael Doughty, as well as rebounding defenders Andrew McLeod, Ben Hart, Martin Mattner, Graham Johncock, Kris Massie and Nathan Bassett.
The brilliant McLeod (29) and ageless veteran Hart (25) shared 54 disposals.
And the Crows had no fewer than 14 individual goalkickers, including Ben Rutten, last year's All-Australian full-back, who played at full-forward in the absence of captain Mark Ricciuto, a late withdrawal with tight hamstrings.
Midfielder Scott Thompson (groin) also withdrew, and Hayden Skipworth and Jason Porplyzia were included and kicked one and a game-high three goals respectively.
Adelaide also had regular centre half-back Ken McGregor in its forward set-up and he also was among the goalkickers.
The Crows were already without Ian Perrie (knee) and Brett Burton (two-match suspension) from the team which beat Fremantle by 11 points at Subiaco Oval last Saturday night.
The Bulldogs lost forward Robert Murphy (ankle) and defender Chris Grant (back) in the third quarter. Both were assisted from the field by trainers, but Murphy recovered to play in the final term.
Lindsay Gilbee, Nathan Eagleton, Daniel Giansiracusa, Adam Cooney, Ryan Griffen, Scott West, Rohan Smith and Jordan McMahon were busy Dogs, but it was difficult to find consistent players or many who made a real impact in a side thumped by so much.
Adelaide coach Neil Craig said his players' sharing of the workload was the most pleasing aspect of the win.
And on the Dogs having played their previous four matches at Telstra Dome, Craig said: "It's a great stadium … but we wouldn't like to do that."
"They've played some really exciting footy and this was their first trip away. I obviously haven't spoken to Rod (Eade) about it but I don't think he'd be overly concerned (by the size of the loss). There are some really good reasons why their performance was not as high as he would have liked."
"It (Telstra Dome's surface) is harder, it's a fast surface, it's a high-speed game. The ball movement is incredibly quick. The other really quick ground is the one in Brisbane."
"To play there week after week is really demanding … I mean, you play indoors, it's fantastic conditions, and then to be exposed to outside conditions for (the first time in) a month … yeah, I think that might have been a bit unsettling to them. That would be another reason that we didn't necessarily see a lot of their flow-on football."
Bulldogs coach Eade said his side had been 'smashed in every area by a very good football team'.
"They were very clean at the stoppages, they were very clean with their disposals," he said. "Obviously our guys are a bit shell-shocked. It's a good reality check and I think it's a good learning curve, too."
"For a young squad, we've just got to learn off the teams that are the best, and if we want to make the finals this year we'll have to obviously improve on that effort."
