Vest not best for Petrenko
After three matches wearing the sub's vest, utility Jared Petrenko was happy to fully show his wares against West Coast
Petrenko had a slow start to the season because of nagging abdominal and foot complaints, forced to wait until round seven to make his first appearance for the Crows this year.
The 21-year-old started the game as a substitute, managing only four possessions after being introduced into the contest in the third quarter against Melbourne.
To his disappointment, the former rookie was left out of the team to play Gold Coast the next week and had to wait another fortnight before resuming his role as the substitute in the clash with the Brisbane Lions in round 10.
He picked up seven disposals in limited game time in the loss to the Lions, doing enough to earn a starting position against North Melbourne in round 11.
However, he didn't avoid the substitute's vest completely against the Kangaroos, making way for midfielder Brad Symes early in the third quarter of the clash.
Petrenko started on the interchange bench against the Eagles on Saturday and a shoulder injury to Kurt Tippett, which forced the Crows to 'activate' substitute Symes early in the third quarter ensured the tough onballer would play his first full game of the season.
Petrenko, who has been used predominantly as a small forward or defender in his 24-game career, was given a rare opportunity to play in the midfield against the Eagles and made a significant impact in the second half.
He picked up eight possessions in the third quarter, helping Adelaide to slash a 44-point deficit at half-time to just 11 points at the final break.
Teammate Bernie Vince said Petrenko had lifted the team with his intensity and work rate in the third quarter.
"Petrenko was fantastic and his contested ball work was a real feature," Vince said.
"He was really disappointed last week when he got subbed off, so he was pretty hungry to get out there and show he could contribute for four quarters."
Petrenko finished the game with 17 possessions, two clearances and three inside 50s.
His performance drew praise from coach Neil Craig, and guaranteed he would avoid the sub's vest for at least another week.
"I was really pleased with Jared," Craig said.
"Normally, he's been playing in defence or on the wing but he actually played in the midfield and I thought played a large part in what happened in the third quarter.
"With what Jared showed today there's no doubt he'll start to see some more time in the midfield. His run and carry [was good], but his attack on the footy was at a very high level.
"I love the attitude in which he plays with."
