Sunday’s Showdown will be the 39th clash between the South Australian rivals.
Port Adelaide is ahead on the overall ledger with 21 wins to Adelaide’s 17. The Power have won four of the last five matches between the two teams, including the most recent meeting at Adelaide Oval in Round Five.
The Crows currently sit ninth on the AFL ladder with seven wins (and a draw), while the Power are 12th on six wins.
Port Adelaide star Robbie Gray was awarded the Showdown Medal earlier this season. Gray averages 8.4 clearances per game this season – ranked second in the competition. Crow Scott Thompson is equal-third with an average of 8.1.
Crows forward Eddie Betts will play his 50th consecutive AFL game this weekend.
Betts has kicked 13 goals in three matches against Port Adelaide since joining the Crows. He bagged five goals in Adelaide’s Showdown loss in Round Five.
Port Adelaide match winner Chad Wingard is the in-form forward of the competition. Wingard has kicked more goals (18) in the past six rounds than any other player. He’s kicked a total of 32 goals for the season, ranked equal-10th alongside Crows captain Taylor Walker. Wingard has been involved in 33 per cent of Port Adelaide’s scores this season – more than any of his teammates.
The biggest-ever crowd for a Showdown was 51,140 at Football Park in Round Five, 2003.
The free-wheeling Power play on from the mark more than any other team in the competition. Port Adelaide also averages more tackles per game (73.1) than any side, and rank third for uncontested marks compared to the its direct opponent.
The Power and Crows are the second and third-ranked clearance teams in the League. Port Adelaide averages 42.7 clearances per game compared to Adelaide’s 42.5. The Power average more stoppages in their games than any other team this season.
The Crows have the highest kick-to-handball ratio (1.51) in the AFL while the Power (1.25) try and incorporate more handball chains into their ball movement.
Port Adelaide utility Justin Westhoff is ranked equal-fifth in the League for marks (100).
If selected, young Crows Matt Crouch, Kyle Hartigan, Jake Lever and Riley Knight will all play their first Showdowns on Sunday.
Despite opposition teams trying to defend the area, the Power still move the ball through the corridor 32.5 per cent of the time – the third most of any team.
Power skipper Travis Boak leads the club in total possessions (358) and handball receives (128).
In-form defender Jack Hombsch could have the job on Taylor Walker in the absence of injured Port Adelaide full-back Alipate Carlile. Hombsch held Collingwood spearhead Travis Cloke goalless in trying conditions last week. Tom Jonas could also be missing for the Power through injury.
The Power like to get numbers behind the ball and are the No.1 team in the competition for preventing opposition scores inside their defensive 50m.
