ADELAIDE coach Neil Craig says his side has under-performed in the past two finals series and must stick to the script to avoid a third-straight elimination final loss against Essendon at AAMI Stadium on Friday night.

The Crows led by 15 points at three-quarter time in their knockout clash with Hawthorn at Etihad Stadium in 2007, but a costly skill error in the dying minutes opened the door for Lance Franklin to kick a match-winning goal.

Last year, Adelaide put in one of its worst performances of the season, going down to an undermanned Collingwood by 31 points in a home elimination final.

The Crows have emerged as one of the more dangerous sides in the competition over the second half of the season and Craig challenged his players to replicate that form on Friday night.

"I don’t think our performance against Collingwood last year was the maximum we could’ve given and I don’t think the game against Hawthorn [in the elimination final] the year before was at a level we wanted as a football club," Craig said.

"We know there's no guarantee of success at this level, but if we're honest with ourselves and, as a club we are, the last two finals we've come off the ground thinking that's not really the style of footy we've wanted to play.

"I'll use the latest game against Carlton as an example; that's the sort of style, intensity and competitive nature we need to play with on Friday night. I would think, irrespective of the score, if we are able to do that this week we’ll walk off the ground pretty satisfied."
