Adelaide’s failure to win games in Victoria was again highlighted after its 84-point thrashing at the hands of Geelong at Kardinia Park.

Eight of the Crows had played in State games four days earlier but the performance underlined Adelaide’s inconsistency and the side was criticised for its lack of intensity on the road.

Before heading to Kardinia Park, Adelaide had lost away games to Essendon (45 points), St Kilda (131 points) and North Melbourne (two points).

Ashley Porter wrote in the Sunday Mail: “Adelaide’ roller-coaster AFL season took another dive ... Unable to curtail Geelong’s fleet of pacy players, damaging forwards and a sensation 10-goal third term, the Crows’ Victoria mission again was a disaster."

Coach Graham Cornes said: “We didn’t get first use of the ball out of the centre, and that was disappointing. They worked a lot harder than we did to get the ball and they were using it very, very efficiently.”

Billy Brownless booted six goals for the Cats while for the Crows, Bruce Lindner kicked three last quarter goals against his old club and rover Tony McGuinness kicked three goals from 24 possessions.

At the halfway mark of the season, Adelaide had won four of its first 11 games in the national competition.

This year the Adelaide Football Club celebrates the 20th anniversary of its first AFL game for premiership points.
