Matt Cowdrey has won his third gold medal in London, becoming Australia’s greatest gold medal winner in Paralympian history.

Overnight, the Crows Ambassador defended his 50m freestyle S7 title in world record time of 25.13sec to take his career gold count to 11, surpassing track sprinter Tim Sullivan's previous mark of 10.

Cowdrey, 23, won three gold in 2004, five in 2008 and has three so far in 2012. He still has three events left - the 100m freestyle, 200m individual medley and the medley relay before the swimming ends on Saturday.

"It was close to (the perfect race), I'd critique the finish slightly, but except for that, I think everything was pretty perfect," Cowdrey said.

"It's hard to describe how that one actually feels. The first one is obviously special, but other than that, that one is definitely there and to be able to swim that one as well as I did tonight, that was the most important thing.

"From the morning swim, that's the quickest I've gone in a heat by about 0.20sec and then to go close to that again, 25.1 tonight, that's getting quick.

"It's special and there's no other word I can use to describe it."
