Good news for Crows
Adelaide captain Mark Ricciuto says he is 'highly unlikely' to play in Saturday's preliminary final against West Coast but is a 'realistic chance' of being avai
And Ricciuto expects Brett Burton to play at AAMI Stadium on Saturday and he is also optimistic about Andrew McLeod's chances of resuming this week.
Adelaide has again listed Ricciuto's return as 'indefinite', and has Burton (hamstring), McLeod (foot) and Ben Hart (Achilles) as 'tests', although Hart is also rated as 'unavailable this week - at this stage'.
Ricciuto and Hart trained away from the main group on Monday, Burton was involved in the full session - as he was last Friday - and McLeod did most of the group's work.
Ricciuto has missed Adelaide's past three matches through the debilitating effects of parvovirus B19. Burton has missed the past five games and McLeod and Hart the past two.
"I'm feeling very well," Ricciuto said. "I got the all-clear Friday to start training and I had a bit of a run on Saturday and did a few skills and felt pretty good.
"I've just got to build it up each day and not try to do too much too quickly. I don't think it will take too long to get back up near full fitness.
"I'm probably highly unlikely (to play) this week. I've got to see how I go. I felt better on Saturday than what the doctor said I would, and I think with a full week's training this week I should be feeling pretty good by the end of the week.
"I felt probably about 70-80 per cent on the weekend. I certainly didn't push myself. I probably did five kilometres of longer running and a few strides and a bit of ballwork. I got through that better than I thought I would so hopefully I keep surprising myself with how I go with training.
"I did a bit of a recovery session yesterday and had another practice after that. I'm still about one-and-a-half kilos down but that might be a good thing - it might get me a bit quicker for the next couple of weeks.
"I haven't ruled myself out (this week) but I'd need to do some pretty quick stuff to get myself right for the weekend.
"Generally you have to train flat out on Wednesday and prove to the coach you can play a full game of finals football and play it in a way that is obviously positive to the team."
Ricciuto admitted he had been 'very frustrated' by being sidelined at such an important stage of the season, and said he did not know how he had caught the disease that inflamed his liver and had left him feeling lethargic.
"I think I was just very unlucky," he said. "The doctor said I had more chance of winning X-Lotto than getting what I did, and I didn't win X-Lotto either so it's been a bad couple of weeks. But that's the way it goes. It's not what you want at this time of the year but things don't always go to plan.
"Definitely I'm a realistic chance next week. The coach will back me in to make the right call. I've got a very good relationship (with Neil Craig) and he knows I won't give him any false information.
"I'm smart enough to know there's a lot riding on the game and I'm not going to put myself in front of the footy club. So we'll just have a chat and see how things go during the week."
Of Burton and McLeod, Ricciuto said: "I don't know too much about Andrew but if he's fit he'll want to play. But certainly the Birdman's flying around the change rooms, pretty confident and jumping around, and he trained well on Friday. I think you'll see the Bird out on the ground on the weekend.
"With Andy, we'll have to see how he trains this week, but he's looking all right. He's got a bit of a smile on his face.
"The Bird is a very fit player, anyway. He'll be fine. And Andy's missed only a couple of weeks. Whether it's Brett, Andy or myself, we'll all have a chat with the coach. We're all experienced enough to know when to make the right call. It's going to be a tough call.
"Whether Benny Hart (Achilles) and myself don't play or if Andy doesn't come up or if some of the younger players who have been doing the job the last couple of weeks get dropped, there are going to be some tough calls made.
"But we're a very tight team and we'll support blokes who don't get in and make sure they understand they're still a part of it and still have a role to play this week or next week."
