Fans stir memories with highlights
Crows fans have so far thought of some great highlights to be considered for ranking among the 20 Greatest Crows Moments.
Crows fans have so far thought of some great highlights to be considered for ranking among the 20 Greatest Crows Moments.
We are not sure how we are going to fit all these special moments from our history into a final 20 but it will be fun trying.
Adelaide’s campaign to highlight the special moments of our history - part of the celebrations to mark the 20th anniversary of the Club’s launch - will continue for another month.
A panel of football experts will then select their 20 Greatest Moments and fans will also be asked for vote for their favourites in the countdown to the round one clash against Hawthorn at AAMI Stadium.
Here’s a cross-section of supporter views from the website and through social media...
Rick Bannon, commenting on www.afc.com.au, loved the 1997 preliminary final:
“There was a point during the 3rd quarter when one lady turned to us & said "it’s going to be a long drive home tonight fellas". Although things were looking grim, we never gave up hope. Then when Jarman kicked the goal to put us in front & with only seconds to go, I had great pleasure in tapping the same lady on the shoulder & telling her "it’s going to be a long drive home tonight along the freeway , isn’t it love." She soon left while me & my friends were celebrating like no other. Straight away working out how to get tickets to the following week, the GF. So we lined up all night at a ticketing agency in Melbourne & slept out on the steps all night to gain our first GF tickets.”
John Cook nominated Rod Jameson’s goal after the siren against Fitzroy in 1991:
“It was a wet affair, low scoring and whilst Adelaide were favourites (pregame) Fitzroy lead for most of the game. It wasn’t until the dying last few seconds that Rod Jameson had the ball and in shocking conditions he put the ball through for a goal after the final siren. Jamo became a hero that night and it showed that regardless of what situation you are in if you stick together and fight to the very end you can overcome obstacles you never thought were possible.”
Matthew says he had a glimpse of the future when Adelaide played Hawthorn in 1995:
“In terrible conditions on Saturday night at Football Park, the Crows were 34 points down at half time (and could have easily been further behind - 5.11 to 1.1!). The game looked lost! Much of the crowd had taken shelter, moved to the bar or gone home. But we pegged our way back into the game, kick-started by a goal after a long run from Simon Tregenza. But were still down late in the last quarter. Enter Andrew McLeod in his rookie season. He sprinted past Ray Jencke to a loose ball in the forward pocket, paddled it in front of him, picked up the slippery ball and dribbled a magical goal from the boundary line. Crows win by 2 points and everyone who saw it knew #23 was going to be a star!”
Fifteen years later Adelaide said goodbye to McLeod and other club favourites, a moment listed by Margot Phillips:
“Another memory is the last game of 2010 farewelling Goodwin, McLeod, Burton and Hentschel, how proud we were to see then 19th man stand as one to thank our champions.”
It’s not too late to add your greatest moments to our supporter nominations.
