Flashback: First internal trial
What was in the headlines 20 years ago as the Adelaide Football Club prepared for its first season in the AFL?
January 12, 1991: The Advertiser reported it was surprised to see about 1000 fans turn up on a Friday night at Football Park for Adelaide’s first internal trial. Forty-one of the 60 players who had been training with the new club for two months were finally given their chance to play some footy, although the first official trial was still three weeks away. A team wearing the old Woodville guernsey narrowly defeated team-mates in a Geelong style uniform, 7.15 to 6.13. The hit-out was competitive, with many of the players still not certain to remain on the final list and many spots also up for grabs for the February 1 trial against Essendon. “It was great to see so many come along,” Crows football manager Neil Kerley said.
This year the Adelaide Football Club celebrates the 20th anniversary of its first AFL game for premiership points when it plays Hawthorn in the opening round - two decades after the Crows thumped Hawthorn by 86 points at Football Park.
