Crows rookie Sam Martyn will not play again this season.

Extensive investigation has found a clot in a large vein at the base of his neck, causing painless swelling in his left arm.

Martyn, 19, has not played or trained since reporting the issue to club medical staff last week.

Club medical officer Dr Andrew Potter said: “Sam requires a prolonged period of anticoagulant medication and may require surgery. The need for this is currently been evaluated. The medication will prevent Sam from any contact football for at least three months but he will be able to resume some training at some stage in that period.”

Crows football operations manager Phil Harper said Sam’s health was the Club’s priority.

“Whatever treatment he has, he won’t be able to play football again this season,” he said. “That’s really disappointing because he has made rapid progress this year. But it’s a very serious issue and we need to make sure he receives all the necessary treatment and rest.”

The former New South Wales scholarship recruit from Merimbula has been in Adelaide full-time since last November after being elevated to the rookie list. He has been playing with Woodville-West Torrens in the SANFL.
