Two of Adelaide’s most decorated stars agree there’s no secret formula to finals success as the Club prepares for its 14th finals campaign.
Crows Hall of Famers Mark Ricciuto and Andrew McLeod know more than most about playing in finals football.
After missing the Club’s first premiership due to injury, Ricciuto played a huge part in Adelaide’s 1998 Grand Final win, while McLeod’s finals heroics include two Norm Smith Medals and a match-winning seven-goal haul in the 1998 Preliminary Final.
The champions said that the ability of players to stick to their routine and manage the pressure was a key ingredient in successful finals teams.
“You just don’t want to get overawed, you don’t want to do too much thinking about it prior,” Ricciuto said on the season finale of The Crows Show.
“You want to keep preparing exactly the same as you have every other week, as obviously that’s what works.”

McLeod agreed, adding that finals were a time for players to stand up and deliver on footy’s biggest stage.
“You can get caught up in getting worked up and playing the game before it actually is played, so trusting in your preparation, trusting in what you’ve done all year is probably the most important thing,” McLeod said.
“(Finals football) is something that I just embraced and I felt like I belonged there and that I wanted to be there.
“If you look over history, all the great players put their hand up when it came to the big games when it mattered.”
When it comes to the current crop of Crows, both agree that Season 2016 presents a great opportunity for the Club to push deep into September.
“They’ve got a guy that’s played in some finals leading them in Don Pyke, so I think they’re in a good position,” McLeod said.
“They’ve been through a lot as a group, they’re very tight, they’re exciting, they play finals (style) football and the opportunity is there for them if they’re good enough to take it,” Ricciuto said.
