Last week, we asked you to submit your questions for Rory Sloane. Here’s a selection of the best questions and answers. Click the play button above to watch the interview with Sloaney in full …
Rhianna Banfield: If you could travel anywhere in the world where would you travel to?
Sloaney: This year, I really want to travel to Sri Lanka and the Maldives area. I’ll go pretty much anywhere where it’s warm and there’s a beach, so I can surf.
Nathan: With the announcement of Sando's arrival in December has he promised if it’s a boy to call him Rory?
Sloaney: Maybe, as a middle name … that’s all I could squeeze out of him. I think Veronika will have the final say there.
Casey Turner: Do you have superstitions when you run out onto the field? I’ve seen you jump up and touch the door coming out the race and you’re always in front in the sprints?
Sloaney: Yes, they are two things I do that get me going on game day. The sprinting is just something I need to do to get my legs feeling good for the game … I guess they are probably superstitions!
Aaron Eckermann: I love your long blond hair. Will you ever cut it off? Please don’t.
Sloaney: Aaron, just for you, I’ll never cut it off! Okay?
Kaidi James: Would you like to be a one club player?
Sloaney: Yeah, definitely J
Nicola Bell: If you weren't playing in the AFL, where would you be now and what would you be doing with your life?
Sloaney: I’d always planned on doing a building apprenticeship, so maybe if I didn’t get picked up in the draft I would’ve gone down that track. Now, after football I’ve got my heart set on joining the fire brigade or, maybe, being in the media.
:)Sue SueSue Retallick: What's the most challenging part of being an AFL footballer & what won't you miss when your playing days are over? (Hopefully you'll be playing for the Crows for a long time yet!)
Sloaney: The most challenging parts are times like now, where things aren’t going well for you as a footy club. Being part of the leadership group, it definitely puts you under a bit of stress. I love training, but some sessions do test you out especially in the pre-season. I won’t miss feeling all the little sore spots after games.
Aiden van Dam: Best moment playing for the Crows?
Sloaney: When Jared Petrenko kicked the winning goal against North Melbourne earlier this season. It was the most surreal moment. It was awesome.
Lachie Morton: Is it true Paddy Dangerfield dominated you as a junior?
Sloaney: It’s very untrue. It was actually the reverse and I’ve got footage of it as well. I kicked a couple of goals against the Geelong Falcons early in one game. Patty was playing at full-forward at the opposite end. The ball wasn’t getting down to him, so he came back and manned me up. I think I kicked another couple on him after that ... so I had his measure. Although, I do remember one moment where I tried to tackle him and it’s the same now. I was hanging onto the back of him and he was still running and bouncing the ball, dragging me along with him.
Nathan Sith Lord Craill: Sloaney... What your take on the crows lack of performance atm? What do you think the team needs to do to start winning games?
Sloaney: We definitely need more contributors. We can’t just rely on a few to pick everyone up. We play our best when everyone’s contributing and we saw that last year.
Jasmine Keir: How much time do you put into your hair?
Sloaney: None at all. I wake up, have a shower and give my hair a ruffle and that’s about it!
Tate Coleman: How will you crow boys bounce back, win games and make finals?
Sloaney: We can’t afford to think about finals now. We’ve pretty much got to break it down to each contest in every game we play. It’s going to start with Gold Coast this week. It’ll have to be all of us in, playing well, cracking in and playing the Crows footy we’re used to playing.
Ashley O'Donnell: Rory - What strives you week in week out to have what I believe the best work rate in the Crows squad? Seem to never give up!
Sloaney: Ultimately, it’s the team success. I’d love to play in some more finals series and in a Grand Final. That’s what’s drive me, and helping my teammates.
Matt Campain: What was your favourite goal you've kicked so far? Was it the match-sealing goal against Geelong in 2010, the brilliant solo goal against GWS last year, the fantastic goals from the same position on a tight angle away to Fremantle last year, or something else?
Sloaney: The Geelong goal meant a lot. I kicked a goal against Sydney at a similar time in the game to seal it up. There was a special moment with ‘Pup’ (Petrenko). I’ve got a big photo of it in a frame. Pup jumped up on me and we’re celebrating after that goal. That was a really good moment that I’ll cherish forever.
