Brisbane National Talent Manager Rob Kerr says the Lions will continue to talk to both South Australian clubs, despite Jared Polec nominating Port Adelaide as his preferred destination.
Polec, 21, informed the relevant parties of his decision to nominate Port Adelaide on Wednesday. The midfielder has requested a trade home to SA after three seasons in Brisbane.
Kerr said the news would not affect Brisbane’s plans to get the best possible deal for the former No.5 (2010) draft pick, who had previously indicated he was happy to play for either SA-based team.
“Jared expressed a desire to go home, but he is not a free agent so we will continue speaking with both Port Adelaide and Adelaide,” Kerr told lions.com.au.
The Lions said they were hopeful of striking an appropriate deal for Polec, but would keep an open mind throughout the negotiation process.
General Manager of List Development and Strategy David Noble said Adelaide respected Polec’s decision to nominate Port Adelaide, but that the Club would monitor the negotiations whilst also moving on with the rest of its trade period strategy.
“There might not be anything we can do, but until Jared signs on the dotted line we’ll work behind the scenes in regards to where certain other clubs are placed and make the odd phone call to Brisbane to see how they’re going,” Noble said.
“It’s a tricky one. We know Jared barracked for Port as a kid, but he’s also good mates with Brodie Smith. We knew would have to release a player, whereas, Port could do some more strategic things with picks - they were the two clear strategies.
“We thought we might’ve had some players Brisbane was interested in. Those players have had interest in Brisbane; it hasn’t been us just offering up those players.
“We haven’t been able to find a resolution early enough for Jared to make a decision.”
