It would be news to most people that there is a Melbourne-based rock band named The Adelaide Crows.
Even more intriguing is why this four-piece band from Victoria, which doesn’t feature a single Crows supporter, would opt for such a name.
Bass guitarist, Robin Leppitt, says the ‘Adelaide Crows’ came about from a desire to have a band name that everyone would remember and be interested in.
“When you try and name a band, it’s pretty hard to come up with anything original, everything’s pretty much been done before. We thought why not name it after a football team?” Lepitt said.
“We couldn’t name it after any Melbourne teams because all the band members support Victorian teams, so we thought why not try an interstate team. It’s a bit obscure, but it’s a name that everyone remembers and will probably ask questions about.”
The name also resonates with Leppitt’s field of study. He’s currently tackling his thesis on Ornithology (the study of birds).
“None of us are Adelaide Crows fans, we just liked the name and it also ties in with me studying Ornithology as well,” he said.
When quizzed on the quartet’s favourite Crows player, Leppitt said the group couldn’t go past former high-flying superstar Tony Modra.
“It’s Tony Modra no doubt. We have a couple of Western Bulldogs fans in the band and what he did to the ‘Doggies’ back in the 90’s is something they’ll never forget. I think they like him, but they probably also resent him a bit.”
The ‘Adelaide Crows’ highlight Australian singer/songwriter Paul Kelly as a key musical influence and inspiration, saying they regularly receive comparisons to his nephew, musician, Dan Kelly.
The band’s debut six-track EP ‘Ornithology’ was released in June this year and Leppitt said the Indie/folk style tunes have been well received.
“We’ve had a few good reviews so far, we had an official launch in late-August with a pretty good turnout and there aren’t many (EP’s) left which is a good sign.”
The group plan to record another EP this coming summer. Like their namesake (the football team) they are a young, exciting group, so be sure so keep an eye out.
Merchandise is easy to get your hands on, you probably already own a Crows guernsey and everything else can be found in the CROWmania store!
