Patrick Dangerfield has rocketed to equal-first position in the AFL Coaches Association Champion Player of the Year award.
Dangerfield received eight votes from coaches Brenton Sanderson and Kevin Sheedy on Sunday to join Essendon captain Jobe Watson at the top of the leaderboard with 35 votes. The goalkicking midfielder has polled 18 of his 35 votes in the past two weeks after a best-on-ground display in Adelaide’s loss to Hawthorn in Round Six. He also scored maximum votes against the Western Bulldogs last month.
Dangerfield amassed 28 possessions (16 contested), six inside 50ms, five clearances and 4.2 against the Giants, but was beaten for top honours by 10-goal hero Tom Lynch.
Lynch earned a perfect 10 from the coaches after becoming only the third Crow in history to kick double-digit goals in a game. He also collected 21 disposals and 11 marks.
Promising midfielder Sam Kerridge earned five votes after gathering a career-best 27 possessions, 11 marks and three goals. All Australian midfielder Scott Thompson, who topped Adelaide’s disposal count with 32, received four votes.
Bernie Vince (two) and Brent Reilly (one) rounded out the voting, with no GWS players attracting attention of the coaches in the lopsided result.
