CROWS skipper Nathan van Berlo admits Ricky Henderson's incredible six-goal haul in Showdown XXXIII took him by surprise, although he knew the utility possessed the traits of a successful forward.

Henderson was brilliant on Saturday night in his return to the Crows' side after a lengthy stint on the sidelines, booting a career-best six majors and had a seventh disallowed by video review.

Before the match, Henderson's best return was just three goals, in rounds four and 14, 2010.

Henderson last played for the Crows in their round nine win over Richmond.

After the match, van Berlo described the 23-year-old as a real asset.

"You never know what Hendo's got in him … he probably hasn't kicked six goals in a game for his whole life I don't think," the captain said.

"We all know he's lightening quick and he can jump and he's pretty tall and he's a likely type down forward which he showed.

"He's only been playing since he was 16 so it's another great effort and a great story."

Henderson's importance in the forward line could not be overvalued on Saturday night, after Adelaide's two key forwards, Kurt Tippett (concussion) and Shaun McKernan (jaw), both succumbed to injury in the first half.

While Henderson certainly lifted his game against the Power, van Berlo said Adelaide's ability to find different avenues to goal had been an ongoing trend in 2012.

The skipper, who played in Adelaide's failed 2005 and 2006 finals campaigns, said great depth and versatility, particularly in attack, was key to a successful premiership tilt.

"This year we haven't just seen one or two guys play that role for us, you've seen at times Dangerfield and Sloane do it, you've seen Petrenko, you've seen Wright, you've seen Brodie Martin … we've got guys who have been able to stand up when they've been needed," he said.

"In the big games is when you need everyone playing their role and it's going to be no different when you play finals.

"We’ve just got to make sure we [do that] so we know what's expected of each other and if we do we'll get good results."

Van Berlo admitted his side's 58-point win over its archrivals was sweeter than others.

"You've got to be honest with yourself, Showdown's do mean a bit more than a normal win," he said.

"I think tonight in particular, losing the two big guys early on, we had to change our structure up forward and the boys adapted really well to that.

"I really loved the way the boys were able to finish the game off too, it says a bit about the group."
