Crows unlikely to seek Davis
List manager David Noble says it’s unlikely Adelaide will pursue Collingwood defender Leon Davis in the national or pre-season drafts.
Davis recently informed the Magpies he wants to return to his native Western Australia to be closer to family, but the Crows and Port Adelaide were brought into the fray when the 30-year-old’s management revealed the veteran would consider relocating to South Australia, where his partner was raised, if an agreement with Fremantle or West Coast couldn’t be reached.
Fremantle has already ruled out recruiting the dual All Australian.
The Eagles, who have only have two picks in next month’s national draft, also appear unlikely to select the 225-game player.
Noble said the club would weigh up whether Davis fitted into its plans before making a decision by the end of next week.
“If you look at the profile of our group and what we did in trade week in terms of recruiting players in that band of 23-years or under Leon probably doesn’t quite fit into that,” Noble told afc.com.au.
“If he came to the club you’d think he’s going to play straight away, so you’ve got to consider how many games that takes away from a younger player coming into the side and above all else you’ve got to be able to fit him into the salary cap.
“We’ve always said we’d keep a pre-season draft selection open and we’ve got a little bit of interest (in Davis), but if you look at the strategy we used in trade week you’d probably say it’s unlikely.”
Noble said he wouldn’t speak to Davis’ management unless the club decided in favour of recruiting the skilful forward-turned-defender.
Adelaide has a policy of not commenting on individual players in the draft period.
“As the list lodgements are due, we’ll look at the players that have been delisted and assess those players in regards to our needs,” Noble said.
“We won’t be making comment on each individual player.”
Clubs have until Monday to submit their first list lodgement to the AFL.
The national draft will be held in Western Sydney on Thursday November 24, while the pre-season and rookie drafts will take place on December 13.
