MIDFIELDER Bernie Vince says near enough is not good enough for Adelaide.

The Crows have kept pace with both of the league’s undefeated teams, Geelong and St Kilda, this season but lost both times.

On Saturday night, the home side trailed the Cats by just 11 points late in the third quarter but capitulated and went down by eight goals.

Vince said the Crows needed to show more consistency during games to beat the best teams.

“We’ve proven we can match it with teams like Geelong and St Kilda and, up until three-quarter-time, we were still in the contest (in both games),” Vince said on Monday.

“We’ll definitely take that (as a positive) out of Saturday’s game, but it’s disappointing that we fell away in the last quarter because it happened against St Kilda as well.

“Our best is good enough and, if we can be at our best for four quarters, hopefully we can beat those sides.”

Adelaide will be out to extend its perfect away record this season when it takes on Melbourne at the MCG on Sunday afternoon.

The Crows reported no new injuries over the weekend, but utility Scott Stevens is still no certainty to play after suffering concussion in the win over Fremantle in round three.

Melbourne will be without forward Brad Green, who has had surgery to repair his broken jaw.

Adelaide’s developing midfield has focused on improving its body work at training this season in order to combat the harder-bodied teams like Geelong and Hawthorn.

Vince, who has averaged 23 disposals in the opening four games, has also improved his strength and is playing a greater ‘inside’ role.

“I’m playing through the midfield more this year. Last year I was probably more playing wing and an outside-type role,” he said.

“I’ve put a lot bigger onus on myself to perform each week and probably more-so than last year.”
