Several Crows are expected to attract votes at Monday night’s 2015 Magarey Medal count.
South Australian football’s most prestigious individual honour, the Magarey Medal has been awarded since 1898 to recognise the SANFL’s best and fairest player of the premiership season.
Some of the sport’s biggest names have earned the award, including the likes of Barrie Robran, Garry McIntosh and Robert Quinn. Several former Crows also have a Magarey tucked away in the trophy cabinet, including Andrew Jarman, Greg Anderson and Brad Symes.
Dual Crows premiership coach Malcolm Blight was another who won it in 1972. One of the most decorated players in history, Blight went on to win a Brownlow and Coleman Medal later in his career alongside his Magarey triumph.
Mitch Grigg was fourth in last year’s count, polling 14 votes from eight matches. The left-footer was also Adelaide’s leading vote-getter in 2013 while he was affiliated with Norwood.
A number of Crows could be among the votes once again at the SANFL’s night of nights.
Jarryd Lyons excelled in all eight of his games at State League level this year.
The strong midfielder starred in Adelaide’s first win of the season against Sturt in Round Nine with 31 disposals and two goals, and should poll in the Club’s maiden win over Port Adelaide in Round 11.
Four goals in a quarter against North Adelaide in Round 14 could see his name read out, and he was also outstanding against West Adelaide the following week with 35 touches, 12 clearances and a goal.
Runner-up in the Ken Farmer Medal, James Podsiadly should have at least six votes in his pocket after kicking 20 majors in the last two games of the season. Five-goal hauls against Sturt in Round Nine, North Adelaide in Round 14 and West Adelaide in Round 15 could see more votes flow his way.
Podsiadly won’t make his charge until later in the count. The former Geelong premiership player was sidelined for four weeks with a back injury early in the year.
Adelaide’s SANFL season in review
Hard-running onballer Sam Kerridge averaged 24 possessions through 12 games at State League level this season.
Three votes beckon in Adelaide’s huge win over North Adelaide in Round 14, where he collected 31 touches and kicked two goals. Kerridge should also be in the mix to cash in from the Club’s big wins over Sturt (30 disposals, 10 clearances) and Glenelg (31 disposals, nine clearances) to close out the count.
He was also outstanding in Adelaide’s losses to South Adelaide and Norwood early in the season.
Captain Ian Callinan has enjoyed another strong season. A proven vote-getter, he’s played every game and kicked 15 goals in Season 2015.
Callinan could poll minor votes in both of Adelaide’s clashes with former club Central District. He will also be in the mix for his three goals and 22 touches in the SANFL Crows’ first win of the year in Round Nine, and 30 possessions and two goals against Sturt in Round 18.
A number of former Crows are among the favourites to take home this year's Magarey Medal. West Adelaide pair Jason Porplyzia and Chris Schmidt have had outstanding seasons, while Jared Petrenko could be Woodville-West Torrens' best chance.
The event will be held in the William Magarey Room at Adelaide Oval from 7pm, beginning with a South Australian Football Hall of Fame induction ceremony at 7.50pm. The ceremony will be streamed live on the official SANFL website.
The Magarey Medal count will start at 9pm and will be televised live on 7mate.
