What the club says
Adelaide recruiting manager Matt Rendell was delighted to snare two quality midfielders with the club's selections
Draft summary
"We made no secret of the fact that we targeted midfielders. We really stocked up on our talls [in recent drafts], so we've got plenty of those waiting in the wings. We took midfielders three drafts ago with Patrick Dangerfield, Andy Otten and the like and took talls in between, so it worked out that we were going to stick up our mids this time.
"There's a heap of kids left over [including Max Otten] for the rookie draft. We rated the draft really highly. If those 17-year-olds that were picked by Gold Coast last year were in this draft it would have been a super draft - the best draft ever. It would never have been beaten if those 17-year-olds had been there."
Selection No.14: Brodie Smith (Woodville-West Torrens)
Player profile
"Brodie had a great year. He had a great championships and his finals footy with Woodville-West Torrens league side was outstanding. It was a no-brainer for us really.
"Sam Day, Smith and Jared Polec were the standout South Australians. We knew Polec and Day were going early for most of the year, but we were very happy to get Brodie at pick No.14. We basically had Jared Polec and Smith and No.1 and No.2 for us. There were some great interstaters with Dyson Heppell, Andrew Gaff and the likes, but Polec and Smith are home grown and if we have two players we rate similarly we're going to take the local one every time. We had Brodie pegged from last year.
"We saw enough of his reserves footy to know he'd go high this year. He just followed on with his footy this year. He'll come out and train the house down. He's really skinny ... I wouldn't expect him to play straight up but it wouldn't surprise me."
Selection No.61: Jarryd Lyons (Sandringham Dragons)
Player profile
"Jarryd played a fair bit of his footy in the forward line in the second half of the year for Sandringham, mainly because they didn't have a small forward. He's just a really talented kid. He's a natural footballer, but he also tested really well in all the speed, agility and endurance tests.
"I know a lot of people say it, but we had him rated pretty highly and we couldn't believe he got to pick No.61. It wasn't necessarily a needs-based pick. We would have liked a midfielder there, but it just happened Jarryd was still there. We thought it was a little bonus for us at the end."
