Saturday's NAB Challenge clash with cross-town rival Port Adelaide will be a Round One dress rehearsal says Crows forward Josh Jenkins.
Adelaide fielded a largely inexperienced side in its NAB Challenge opener against North Melbourne in Port Lincoln. Although several senior players returned for last Thursday's trip to Simonds Stadium, many key Crows still had their game time managed in preparation for the premiership season.
Both the Crows and Power will head into Saturday's encounter at AAMI Stadium with a 1-1 pre-season record, and Jenkins said Adelaide was likely to field a full-strength squad for its final tune up ahead of the season proper.
"I guess it's probably a dress rehearsal for Round One and the season to come," Jenkins told the press at the Club's Members Day event on Sunday.
"I'm not in on the match committee or anything like that, but I'd imagine we'll try and put our best side available out there and really show what we've got leading into Round One."
Jenkins, who booted a career-best 40 goals last season and finished as Adelaide's second-best goalkicker, said there was still fierce competition for spots heading into Saturday's final pre-season hit-out.
New Crows coach Phil Walsh has gone on record saying he will only select in-form players who are totally committed to his team-first ethos.
Jenkins said no player on the roster could assume their Round One spot was safe.
"You just can't afford to," he said.
"We've got a lot of spots open to fill still, so guys have got to step up and take their opportunities to ensure they get a game in Round One."
While no premiership points will be awarded, bragging rights will still be on the line in Saturday's pre-season 'Showdown' with a big crowd expected at Football Park. Adelaide's SANFL side will also compete in its first trial match of the year at Alberton Oval against the Magpies from 11.30am.
"We'll probably get a few more fans through the gate than if it was a Melbourne side across here," Jenkins said.
"At the end of the day, it's still a NAB Challenge game, but like I said it is probably going to be a full dress rehearsal for both sides so hopefully it'll be a pretty high quality affair."
Jenkins said the Crows were on the right path in their preparations for their season opener against North Melbourne at Adelaide Oval on Sunday, April 5.
"I think we're building nicely," Jenkins said.
"Phil was reasonably happy with three quarters in the first week, and then after quarter-time on Thursday night we were pretty good as well.
"Rome wasn't built in a day as they say. We've got some work to do but, over the next two weeks before Round One, hopefully there's enough time to improve on what we need to leading into the season."
Saturday's NAB Challenge clash with Port Adelaide kicks off from 3.40pm at AAMI Stadium.
