Australia’s first female footballer to kick 100 goals in a season says she is excited by the possibility of representing the Crows at AFL level.
Abbey Holmes is a South Australian born footballer plying her trade in the Northern Territory.
She became the first female to crack the century back in 2014 while playing for Waratahs Football Club in the NTFL Women’s Competition.
Since then she has gone on to play in exhibition games, the EJ Whitten Legends game as well as the Slowdown.
During a recent visit to the Crows’ West Lakes training facility, Holmes said the creation of a national women’s football league was a huge step forward for the sport.
“Having the announcement of the national women’s competition in 2017 has just seen this women’s football space just go absolutely crazy,” Holmes said.
“Last year we saw the participation rate increase by 46 per cent nationwide and I do believe having this announcement of that pinnacle level, that national league, is going to see this increase dramatically over the coming years.
“It’s extremely exciting for young girls as well to now have something to aspire to.”
Holmes said the agreement between the Adelaide Football Club and AFLNT was a fantastic initiative and something that made her dream of pulling on a Crows jumper in a national league one step closer.
“Obviously being a South Australian girl I am a Crows girl through and through,” she said.
“I’m a South Australian now playing in the Northern Territory, for me personally it’s a great alignment.
“Michael Solomon is our CEO at AFLNT and he is doing a phenomenal job.
“He is extremely passionate about women’s footy and we are all passionate about creating a strong bond with SA and the Adelaide Football Club to hopefully continue our alignment moving forward and heading to that national competition.”
In response to the query about the depth of talent in South Australian female football, Holmes was emphatic.
“There’s plenty of talent around,” she said.
“There are some phenomenal athletes in the Territory, I have watched a few games here in SA and I have been incredibly impressed with what I’ve seen.
“Individually the talent pools are great but together SA and NT will be a huge force to be reckoned with on the national stage.”
