Nathan Bassett has told afc.com.au radio show Crow Call that Adelaide’s defensive group must improve on recent performances against West Coast.

The newly crowned All Australian admitted the Crows defence had been unable to perform at its best against the Eagles in the past three clashes, including last year’s preliminary final at Subiaco Oval.

“They’ve (West Coast) got an interesting forward line,” Bassett said. “They’re quite tall, and they can be quite sharpish. (There are) interesting match-ups throughout defence; we probably haven’t performed too well against them the last three times as a defensive team. We’re pretty keen to have a good performance.”

West Coast will enter Saturday’s Preliminary Final with an imposing forward line featuring the in-form Quentin Lynch, Andrew Embley and Ashley Hansen as well as a host of talented small forwards.

Bassett is likely to be matched up against a mobile tall forward.

“I’m not completely sure who I’ll get, it really depends on the make-up of their side,” he said. “It will probably be a tall forward, someone like an Embley at this stage.”

Bassett has enjoyed arguably his best season in 2006, bringing him the honour of being a place in the All Australian side.

“It was something that was a little bit unexpected; it is certainly a nice honour and something no one can take from you at any stage," he said. "(It’s) a nice little reward at this stage of my career.”
