Adelaide players will be wearing special watches during Friday night’s JLT Community Series clash with Richmond at Etihad Stadium.
The devices are wrist-worn accelerometers, which a group of players have volunteered to wear 24 hours a day for seven days including Friday night’s pre-season match.
An accelerometer is an electromechanical device used to measure acceleration forces.
The Crows sought AFL approval for players to wear the watches with the aim of determining how much energy a player expends during a game.
For a week, the Club will track the players’ food intake and calculate the energy they consume, as well as monitoring their sleep patterns.
The players use different amounts of energy each day, and the data from the watches will help determine if they need to alter their diets accordingly.
The watches will also be used as an education tool to help Adelaide’s first-year players understand their energy requirements for training. It’s an initiative of Club Dietitian Brie Salagaras.
