Off-season recruit Sam Gibson is making sure he gives himself every chance at breaking into a strong Adelaide side as the 2018 season approaches.
The former North Melbourne midfielder hasn’t missed a beat since joining the Crows, claiming consecutive 2km time trial victories while putting together an impressive first pre-season at his new Club.
“Being able to come in and do the bulk of sessions and being able to get a lot of really good work in was really important in the early days,” he said.
“Now it’s about transitioning into the footy stuff and figuring out the subtle nuances between the Adelaide game plan and the game plans I’ve been used to in the past.”
Gibson has forged a reputation as a dependable elite runner in his career to date, playing 130 consecutive matches since his debut before being signed by the Crows in October.
But he knows that he’ll need to continue to work hard to gel with the midfield group under Scott Camporeale if he is to continue his run of senior appearances.
“It’s going to be a really hard team to break into and I’m aware of that,” he said.
“I feel like I’ve got some good footy in front of me and if I can find a role that will help the team and help us go one better this year that’ll be great.
“Hopefully there’s a few different roles that I’ll be able to target in that best 22.”
Currently three days into the Crows’ week-long training camp on the Gold Coast, Gibson is finding the change of environment beneficial both on and off the track.
“Getting to know guys on a more personal level will hopefully help us to bond in the footy sense as well,” he said.
“(Spending time with each other) is important for me, because hopefully I’m going to be playing a fair bit of footy with them.”
