After 109 AFL games, Adelaide defender Andy Otten has called time on his career.
The 30-year-old broke the news to the Club on Tuesday afternoon in an emotional speech to the playing group.
Speaking to AFC Media, Otten revealed the players he looked up to in his early years at West Lakes.
“Simon Goodwin helped me out immensely, the way he trained and went about it was something I always idolised,” Otten said.
“Ben Rutten, he was always going to be a coach… he was great at teaching me the angles and the art of being a defensive player.
“He helped me through a lot of my career, he was great to chat to and talk to.
“And Andrew McLeod, who had the locker next to me, he was an animal in the gym and always trained with purpose.”
After 12 years as a Crow, Otten had a decent amount of highlights to look back on.
“Always the debut game, even though I didn’t do much,” Otten said with a smile on his face.
“It was against the Hawks in 2008, a team I had grown up supporting so that was really cool.
“The next year, kicking my first goal, remember that greatly as well… kicking from outside 50.
“Some of the finals I’ve played will stick in my mind forever as well.”
Otten has played two senior games in 2019, returning to the side against Carlton in Round 19 in front of a very special member of the crowd.
“One of the proudest moments from this year was playing at the MCG against Carlton and having my daughter there,” he said.
“It was the first time watching her dad play… I know she won’t remember it, but I definitely will.
“It’s one of my proudest football moments ever.”
Otten will play out the 2019 season with the Crows and will likely feature in the SANFL finals campaign.
As a leader of the State League side’s young defense, Otten spoke with praise for the future backline.
“I’ve had a good first hand look at our young backline,” he said.
“They’re all developing really well and are probably some of the best first-year players I’ve seen walk into the footy club.
“Having a hand in their development has been really fulfilling and made it one of my most enjoyable years playing footy.
“You’ve got Jordon Butts who’s going to be a really good key position player, Sholly (Lachlan Sholl) and Will Hamill, the progression they’ve made… then you’ve got Ned McHenry and Chayce Jones.
“Some of these first year guys are really special.”
