Contested ball the key: Wright
Matthew Wright has outlined that winning the contested ball battle will be the key for Adelaide against the undefeated Swans
The round six match will see Sydney and Adelaide, the competitions leading contested ball sides face-off in what is arguably the Crows toughest test to date in season 2012.
“They’re [Sydney] the number one contested footy side and we’re number two... so we know it’s going to be a fairly contested game of footy and we’re looking forward to that,” Wright said.
Wright said the side is confident its diverse midfield can step-up and match Sydney’s dangerous throng of ball winners.
“We’ve got some quality ball winners ourselves with Thommo [Scott Thompson], V.B [Nathan van Berlo] plus we’ve got seven to eight other guys who can run through the midfield now.”
“We will definitely be looking to nullify their on-ball brigade, but we’ve got to focus on what we’re doing as well and get after the footy ourselves.”
The 22-year-old said the Crows will be focused on delivering a strong four quarter effort against the top placed Swans after a disappointing third quarter lapse in the round five Balfours Showdown.
“We probably only played three quarters last week against Port, in that third quarter we had a bit of a lapse and let them kick five goals.”
“This week playing a side that’s five and zip, you can’t afford to play one bad quarter of football so we will look to fix that.”
Wright, who will play his first ever game at the SCG on Saturday night said that playing on the smaller sized ground wasn’t a major concern for the Crows, but making the most of opportunities would be vital.
“We need to keep the ball in our front half for as long as we can and when we get opportunities make sure we score from them.”
After falling short against Hawthorn in round three, Wright said the side couldn’t wait to test themselves against another quality top four side in Sydney.
“We see Sydney as another team who will be around the mark and we are looking for a really strong performance and hopefully we can come away with a win.”
