Improved contest and transition defence have been catalysts in a boost in form for Kuwarna, forward Taylor Walker believes.
Since Round Six, Kuwarna has not registered a loss, producing wins over North Melbourne and Port Adelaide while sharing the points with 2023 grand finalists Brisbane.
Speaking to Roo, Ditts and Loz on Triple M Adelaide Breakfast, Walker praised the improvement from his side.
“We’ve certainly improved over the past month, our contest has been back where it’s needed to be and our backs have been unbelievable in standing up to the opposition’s forward 50 entries,” Walker said.
“Our ability to then score from our defence has been particularly impressive, which has been something we’ve struggled with in the past.
“So while we didn’t come away with the four points against Brisbane, there are still lots of positives to take away from the game, and we are confident in the way we are playing.”
Kuwarna suffered an injury blow in Sunday’s clash against Brisbane, with defender Josh Worrell fracturing his left forearm.
Walker spoke glowingly of the influence Worrell has had on the Kuwarna defence.
“He’s been unbelievable for us, he’s a great kid and has all the traits we absolutely love,” Walker said.
“He’s super competitive, loves winning and is a great presence around the team, so he’ll be a big loss for us.
“But we’ll wrap our arms around him and hopefully we’ll see him back for the last few games of the season.
Next on the agenda is a trip to the MCG this Saturday to take on reigning premier Collingwood, in a match-up that produced two thrilling encounters in 2023.
“We are chomping at the bit to get over there and have a crack at them at the MCG,” Walker said.
“Last year we pushed them very close both times, so we know that we stack up pretty well against them.
“These are the challenges you love to take on as a player, and for us to get it done we will need to be at our best for the whole four quarters.”
Kuwarna faces Collingwood at the MCG this Saturday afternoon, with the first bounce at 1.15pm (ACST).
