Star trio Patrick Dangerfield, Scott Thompson and Sam Jacobs have been nominated by their Crows teammates for the 2012 AFL Players Association Most Valuable Player Award.

The players’ views are consistent with those of the All-Australian selectors, who on Tuesday included Dangerfield, Thompson and Jacobs, as well as Brent Reilly and Taylor Walker in the 40-man All-Australia squad.

Dangerfield (equal-third) and Thompson (fifth) also featured prominently in the AFL Coaches Association Player of the Year.

As part of the AFL Players Association awards, Dangerfield has also been nominated for the Robert Rose ‘Most Courageous Player’ nod, while utility Josh Jenkins is in the running for the ‘Best First Year Player’. Nathan van Berlo will compete with the other 17 skippers across the competition for ‘Best Captain’.

The AFLPA MVP remains the only peer-voted award in the AFL industry.  The winner is awarded the Leigh Matthews Trophy and recognises qualities such as versatility, ability to perform under pressure, leadership and courage.

The MVP voting is a two stage process, beginning with each player voting for the three teammates he considers to have been the most valuable this season.  Each club’ votes are then tallied to form a nomination list comprising 54 players across the 18 teams.

Then, in the second round of voting, all AFL players choose from the list of 51 nominees to determine who will be the MVP (they cannot vote for players from their own team in second round).

The 2012 AFL Players’ Association MVP Award Winners will be announced on Tuesday 11 September.
