Adelaide small forward Ned McHenry says he has “embraced” being the Crows’ substitute in 2023.

The 22-year-old has been given the role on six occasions this season and impressed with his ability to come on and have an instant impact.

Joining Sauce and Thomo on last week’s edition of The Crows Radio Show, McHenry delved into his mindset around coming on as the substitute.

“It’s been tricky, the sub is an interesting role, I hadn’t done it before this season and I have found myself playing that role a fair bit this year,” McHenry said.

“It is different but I’ve just tried to embrace it and look at it as a way to try and perform and add value to the team.

“You are a spectator and you’re watching the game for so long, and then you are asked to quickly get going and have an instant impact.

“But overall it has been very enjoyable and we’ve had some good wins at Adelaide Oval which has made it fun coming on in the last quarter.”

McHenry said maintaining a positive attitude has helped him throughout the season.

“It’s about finding a balance I suppose,” McHenry said.

“You want to push yourself and ask the coaches what it is they need to see and what do I need to do (to get that full game).

“But when there are guys ahead of you that are performing well and the team’s performing well, that’s a good thing.

“I’ve still been part of that AFL group as the substitute and while the team is performing well there is no need to change that, I’ll just keep working hard and when my opportunities do present I will be ready.”
