ADELAIDE caretaker coach Mark Bickley says the club won't take consolation in a honourable loss to a white-hot Geelong at AAMI Stadium on Sunday.

The rampant Cats have won their past two games against Melbourne and Gold Coast at Skilled Stadium by a combined total of 336 points.

The Crows have also won their last two matches against lowly ranked teams Port Adelaide and the Brisbane Lions, but Bickley said the clash with Geelong would give his team a more accurate measure of its improvement.

"I can't control what's happened [with Geelong] in the last two weeks," Bickley said on Thursday.

"All I'm worried about is making sure that when we go out there the same thing [a hefty defeat] doesn't happen to us.

"We're not into respectable losses. There'll be some elements of what we measure and what we want to do, but we're out there to win.

"Respectable losses are not what we're about because that [suggests] there's a comfort about losing, which I don't subscribe to.

"The big thing at the moment is that the profile of our squad is very young.

"There's a bit of a gulf [in experience between Adelaide and Geelong] there, so it will test our guys to see whether they can compete against a really seasoned, proven and successful side."

Forward Kurt Tippett (hamstring) has been ruled out of the game against the Cats, while Chris Knights (hip) will have to pass a fitness test at training on Thursday night.

Richard Douglas and Ian Callinan, who have both missed the past five weeks through injury, have been cleared to play but will return in the SANFL.

"Kurt is just not quite right and in terms of where we want to go and what we're doing at the moment we'd rather be a bit conservative with Kurt," Bickley said.

"Chris Knights still has to get through training tonight, but I'd be confident he will."

The Crows are also taking a conservative approach to injured forward Jason Porplyzia's recovery from a shoulder reconstruction.

Porplyzia dislocated his troublesome shoulder in the opening minutes of the club's round one win over Hawthorn.

The one-time leading goalkicker had hoped to return for the latter rounds of the season, but has abandoned those plans with the aim of being ready for the start of pre-season training.

"We took a really aggressive approach to it [Porplyzia's rehabilitation] hoping that we'd be in a position to be playing in the finals, and that Jason would be able to play for a month or so before the finals to get himself right," Bickley said.

"With where we're positioned at the moment, we're being a little bit conservative again in giving him those extra two or three months to heal before he starts pre-season again."

Tippett has been in the headlines this week, following revelations of an 'out-clause' in his contract that would allow him to move to the club of his choice at the end of next season.

It comes only a week after promising defender Phil Davis announced he was leaving West Lakes to take up a lucrative offer with Greater Western Sydney.

The club is also waiting on the signatures of star pair Bernie Vince and Taylor Walker, but Bickley denied perceptions players wanted to leave the club were accurate.

"Every club has probably got 8-10 guys coming out of contract each year, so I don't think you can make too much comment about that," he said.

"As for Kurt's situation, in terms of having an 'exit clause' well I'm unaware of that and it's yet to be confirmed, but Kurt is a really required player for us.

"We've been rapt with his development from a player that came from another sport to where he is now.

"He's very much a part of our future next year and we look forward to having him back [in the team] next week."

Bickley boasts a perfect coaching record since taking over from predecessor Neil Craig ahead of the round 19 match against the Power.

He's yet to publicly declare he wants the permanent role, but said he expected to go through the interview process if he chose to pursue the opportunity.

"The club hasn't said, 'don't bother applying'," he said.

"They've said it's up to me. I would suggest that if I decided I was going to apply for it they'd be happy for me to apply."
