Adelaide ruckman Reilly O’Brien says there is a much more pleasing aspect to come out of the Crows’ final pre-season hit-out against Brisbane than the win.
The Crows enjoyed a three-point win against the Lions in their AAMI Community Series match on Thursday night, with the game serving as their final tune up before Round One.
Speaking to the media on Monday, O’Brien said the players had worked hard on scenario-based training over the summer and executed it well against the Lions.
“It was pleasing to play some good footy and measure up against them,” O’Brien said.
“Obviously the result doesn’t mean much but it’s always pleasing to play fairly well and do some things fairly well that we practised over the summer against a good opposition.
“We've probably let ourselves down in those close games (over the past few years), so being able to execute under pressure in tight games is something we’ve definitely been working on.
“It was pleasing to be able to do that against a good opposition.”
O’Brien said the squad was in a solid spot as it looked towards its Round One clash against St Kilda.
“I feel like we’ve had a good pre-season as a group, I feel like we’ve definitely improved, built some good connections, and now the real stuff starts pretty soon,” O’Brien said.
“I’m really excited for that and we are ready to go.
“This time last year we had a few guys under an injury cloud - we had guys like Riley Thilthorpe go down and Tex a bit sore, so I feel like from an injury point-of-view we are in a really good spot.
“We’ve got the work ahead of us, now, but as I said, I think we are in a really good spot from an energy point-of-view, from an injury point-of-view, and the amount of work we’ve done over the pre-season to really put our best foot forward going into the season.”
In the Community Series match against the Lions, draftee Sid Draper was injected into the game during the second-half, finishing with 14 disposals and five clearances.
O’Brien said the 18-year-old had impressed all summer and looked forward to watching him continue to develop.
“I couldn’t be more impressed by Sid - his character, his work ethic and obviously his skills - he’s so explosive, his feet are unbelievable,” O’Brien said.
“He certainly adds a lot to our team and our midfield mix, so he’ll certainly get an opportunity at some point.”
Adelaide takes on St Kilda at Adelaide Oval on Sunday, March 16, at 12.05pm.
