Adelaide’s quest for back-to-back flags came to an end after a preliminary final loss to Brisbane on Friday but the planning for the 2023 AFLW campaign is already underway.
The Crows finished Season Seven third, with an 8-2 win/loss record and featured in a fifth finals series, before falling to the Lions in the prelim by 23 points.
Speaking to AFC Media on Monday, Crows Head of Women's Football Phil Harper said coaches already had their eyes on next season and knew where the side needed to improve.
“We were able to beat all the other challengers but we had two cracks at Brisbane and Melbourne and they proved to be too strong for us,” Harper said.
“They were able to transition the ball really well into their forward line and that’s something we’ve got to look at doing ourselves.
“It's just that when the whips were cracking against those two really good sides we weren’t able to match it, so there's a bit of work to do.”
Harper said adding a few athletic and speedy players ahead of next season was high on the agenda.
“Brisbane and Melbourne both had some real athletic, quick players and therefore that’s something we’ll be targeting,” Harper said.
“We’ll have a strong look at the SANFL but also maybe look at athletes from other sports who fit that mould of being athletic and quick.”
Adelaide retained or extended the contracts of 25 players from its Season Six Premiership squad and Harper said having stability was also important to help with sustained success.
“They are a great group of people and are one of the most connected teams in the AFLW,” Harper said.
“But there’s always going to be movement because some players will be looking for more opportunity and if that happens, we would understand that.
“We’ve probably got a dozen players who are already contracted for next year and we’ll be looking to re-contract quite a few others.
“In the end, we try to provide an environment where they enjoy their footy and I think they have ever since the first season and hopefully that holds us in good stead.”
