NATHAN Ablett is in line to make his debut for Gold Coast in Saturday's match against Adelaide. Ablett, 25, the younger brother of Suns captain Gary, was the last player added to the new club's senior list when he was taken with the first pick of December's pre-season draft.
A string of injuries combined with lack of form for the club's reserves has so far denied the forward a chance at senior level, but a best on ground performance two weeks ago followed by another promising two-goal display on the weekend has edged him closer to selection. "We've got match committee (this) morning so we'll get more of an idea after that," Gold Coast football manager Marcus Ashcroft said last night.

ADELAIDE and Gold Coast are both anchored in the bottom four but seem to be heading in different directions late in the season. The appointment of Mark Bickley as the Crows' interim coach following Neil Craig's resignation has rejuvenated Adelaide, with two wins and a gallant 11-point loss to Geelong since he took over.
Meanwhile, the young Suns have hit a wall after a brutal month that saw them lose to recent grand finalists Collingwood, St Kilda and Geelong before being humbled in last Saturday's clash against the Brisbane Lions. The teams met in round eight with Adelaide 57-point victors, but it was far from one-way traffic.

All season Gold Coast SUNS coach Guy McKenna has defended his team after big losses and looked for positives in games where it seemed there were none. However, in a game where the GC SUNS motivation should have been at its highest, McKenna was out of positives, with his team capitulating to the Brisbane Lions in the second Clash by 62 points. It was not the margin that had the coach irate; it was the lack of effort which McKenna, for the first time this season, criticised.

GOLD Coast Suns Coach Guy McKenna has conceded the time for excuses has past, publicly slamming his young playing group for the first time this year following a passionless 62-point loss to Brisbane at the Gabba on Saturday night.
McKenna has maintained a patient disposition immediately following some of his team's heaviest defeats in a difficult season but was clearly not about to tolerate and inexcusable lack of effort against the Lions in the second southeast Queensland derby.
"It's difficult to manufacture something when there's no effort and that was the biggest thing out of tonight," McKenna said.

FORWARD Danny Stanley says Gold Coast SUNS needs to redeem itself against Adelaide on Saturday after last weekend's "step back" against the Brisbane Lions. The young GC SUNS were read the riot act after the 62-point loss against their Queensland rivals, with Coach Guy McKenna questioning their effort post-match. Captain Gary Ablett also spoke to the players in the dressing room after the match and said the performance was not acceptable.
