DRAFT: The history of Pick No. 8
Across the League, many of today’s stars were chosen at pick No. 13, including three-time Coleman Medalist Jack Riewoldt (2006), Collingwood’s Taylor Adams (2011) and Carlton midfield star Patrick Cripps (2013).
The selection has also produced a number of AFL greats, including Hawthorn legend Shane Crawford (1991), former Western Bulldogs captain Bob Murphy (1999) and St Kilda great Nick Dal Santo (2001).
Over 16 seasons and 305 games at Hawthorn, Crawford was a four-time All-Australian (1996, 1998, 1999, 2002), a four-time best and fairest for the Hawks and an AFL premiership player in 2008.
He claimed the 1999 Brownlow Medal and in 2012 he was elected into the Australian Football Hall of Fame.
Murphy’s 18-season career at the Bulldogs saw a premiership victory in 2016, although the captain didn’t play in the decider after his season ended prematurely due to an ACL injury.
Despite that, the two-time All-Australian and 2015 AFLPA Captain of the Year was presented with a premiership medal by his coach, Luke Beveridge. He is one of six Bulldogs who have played 300+ games for the club.
Meantime, Dal Santo was a key figure for St Kilda, playing 260 games before he added another 62 games to his name with North Melbourne.
The midfielder was a three-time All-Australian, selected in 2005, 2009 and 2011.
