New Adelaide recruit Patrick Parnell has labelled the past week a blur.

But there’s a few new teammates who have helped him settle into life at West Lakes.

The Crows selected the 19-year-old from NSW with pick No.4 at the AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft last Wednesday.

What followed was a whirlwind 24 hours for Parnell, who arrived in Adelaide Thursday afternoon, trained with his new team Friday, then lined up in the SANFL with the Crows on Saturday.

Parnell, who has been playing with the Murray Bushrangers in the NAB League and Albury Tigers in the Ovens and Murray League, says many players were quick to make him feel welcome but there’s two in particular who have taken him under their wing.

“It’s pretty exciting and it all happened pretty quickly,” Parnell said.

“There were a few players who I spoke to (on Wednesday) and Tom Lynch was one of them - he said it was about opportunity.

“It might not be a traditional way to a footy club or into an AFL environment but it’s an opportunity and I just have to take it with both hands and see what I can do.

“Tom Doedee has also messaged me a little bit, helping me out with structure and things like that.”

The versatile youngster featured with the Crows’ SANFL side against North Adelaide and finished with 11 disposals and four defensive rebounds.

Parnell, who prides himself on his pin-point kicking, decision making and speed, enjoyed lining up in the SANFL and was keen to learn as much as he could to improve.

“(The SANFL) is a step up from what I’ve been playing,” Parnell said.

“It’s a lot quicker but it was a good experience and I’ll be better for it.

“I’ve always wanted to be part of an AFL club environment and there are some great players here at Adelaide Footy Club.

“I’m definitely looking to learn as much as I can and become the best player I can be.”
