Former Adelaide forward Scott Stevens returned to the Crows’ change rooms on Saturday to hand debutant Ronin O’Connor his first AFL guernsey.
Stevens, who played 119 games for the Crows and kicked 71 goals, returned home to Perth after his AFL career and made the trip to Optus Stadium at the Club’s request.
“Big congrats to Ronin, enjoy building a career week by week,” Stevens said in the guernsey presentation.
“It’s not going to automatically happen and you’re a 100-game player… (but) enjoy that challenge of delivering good performances and building a great career.
“I’m sure you’ll have a good one.”
Speaking after his first game, O’Connor said it was a great experience to debut in Perth.
“My home turf in front of the crowd I used to support as a kid… it’s a dream come true to get out and play my first game of footy,” O’Connor told The Optus Crows Show.
“The days leading in I wasn’t too nervous but the morning of I woke up pretty nervous.
“As soon as you get out there and get your first touch, the nerves go away.”
O’Connor finished his first match with eight touches and a game-high tackles.
The West Australian native joined the Crows via pick 42 in the 2019 National Draft and has settled well into Adelaide life.
“We’ve got a good young group coming through,” he said.
“We all get along well and we’re building a great culture at the Club.
“It’s definitely exciting times ahead.”
Also on The Optus Crows Show this week, Brodie Smith chats with James Borlase and a first matchday trip for the Club’s younger players.
