Adelaide’s even spread of scoring options could make the Crows a genuine contender for this year’s SANFL flag.
The League’s top two attacking sides went head-to-head at Adelaide Oval in Sunday’s Semi-Final between the Crows and South Adelaide.
For the second week in a row, the SANFL Crows were deadly in front of goal and finished with a score beyond 120 points to blast the Panthers off the park in a convincing 54-point win.
Adelaide had 10 different goalkickers, including five players finishing with multiple majors.
Jonathon Beech was the standout with a career-best seven-goal haul, but the West Adelaide premiership player said it was simply his turn to finish off the team’s good work.
“It’s a credit to all the boys for the delivery that they gave me,” Beech said after Sunday’s victory.
“I think we had a few boys who kicked over two or three goals, so it was a good team effort.”
Beech has now kicked 13 goals through his past four games and, alongside 2013 Norwood premiership player Mitch Grigg, and battle-hardened duo Andy Otten and Nathan van Berlo, the utility is doing all he can to teach his younger teammates about the demands of finals football.
“It’s good to hit form at this time of the season,” Beech said.
“We do have a really young side.
“A couple of us boys who are over 23 or over 24 try to help lead the team. Having a bit of finals experience myself, it’s good to be around the young lads at this time.”
SANFL Stats: Semi-Final v South Adelaide
For the second final in a row, nearly half of Adelaide’s SANFL Semi-Final side was comprised of players aged 21 or under.
The pressure was further magnified on Adelaide’s young midfield brigade when hardened ball magnet Cam Ellis-Yolmen was forced from the match within the opening minutes with a hamstring strain and Adelaide dropped more than three goals behind late in the first term.
But Adelaide fought its way back into the contest gallantly, holding the Panthers goalless through the second quarter to claim a commanding 26-point lead at half-time.
The floodgates opened from there, but Beech praised Adelaide’s steadfast defence in minimising the impact of South Adelaide’s talented forward line, headed by Ken Farmer Medallist Brett Eddy.
“I think Eddy the last couple of times we’ve played them he’s kicked bags of five and probably over five in the other games so it was a big job for the boys down there,” Beech said.
“We had a lot of run off half-back with Otten and Jake Kelly. They gave us good service up forward as well, and just their ability to put pressure on their forwards and stop them from kicking goals.
“They did really well.”
Adelaide will now prepare to tackle Sturt in Sunday’s Preliminary Final at 2.10pm. The Double Blues fell to Woodville-West Torrens, the SANFL’s best defensive team, by 24 points at Adelaide Oval on Sunday.
