Crows defender Jake Kelly has had to be patient during his AFL career.
The son of Collingwood premiership player Craig Kelly, Jake was overlooked as a father-son selection before being selected as a rookie by Adelaide.
On this Sunday’s episode of The Crows Show, Kelly talks about just how hard he has worked for his AFL career and his determination to succeed.
“It was really disappointing getting looked over (by Collingwood) initially,” Kelly said.
“I was aspiring to play for Collingwood in a way because I’d been supporting that club all my life.
“When that didn’t happen…I didn’t mind because I knew opportunities would come in the rookie draft with Adelaide potentially.”
After a year of solid football in the SANFL in 2015, he earned his debut at AFL level but then was relegated back to the State League for the entire 2016 season.
In 2017, he is back in the senior side and making the most of his opportunities.
“I worked hard last year to improve some things I needed to and over the pre-season and found my way back in Round One,” Kelly said.
“I got a taste of AFL in my second year and that was enough motivation for me.”
Kelly also talks about the now infamous sledge he delivered to Greater Western Sydney champion Steve Johnson.
“I had to say something, he was getting into Daniel Talia I think it was,” Kelly said.
“I just walked over to him and obviously it’s well documented what I said about him paying for seats to Europe.”
