Harry Schoenberg typically radiates the relaxed, easy-going nature you would expect from a kid hailing from a small township in South Australia’s Mid North.
But the 19-year-old admitted to feeling extremely nervous this time last year, heading into the AFL Draft prior to the Crows calling his name at pick No.24.
With 2020 throwing up a whirlwind of uncertainty for potential draftees, Schoenberg had a simple message to this year’s draft class who are anxiously counting down the days to the big event on Wednesday December 9: “just be patient”.
“It’s a very nervous time, but it’s worth the wait,” Schoenberg said.
“Wait until your name is called, don’t overreact, don’t worry too much.
“When your name is called, have a clear head and get ready to start training.”
Schoenberg hit the ground running at West Lakes last pre-season, demonstrating high training standards and leadership qualities for a teenager.
He made his AFL debut in Round 10, playing the remaining eight games of the year.
Schoenberg isn’t resting on his laurels this off-season, spending much of his time in Adelaide hitting the training track.
“(I’ve) mostly been in Adelaide, training with the boys,” he said.
“It’s been a really good group of boys training; we’re running in groups and also coming into the club doing weights.”
