Midfielder Cam Ellis-Yolmen has led Adelaide’s Magarey Medal charge at the SANFL’s official count at Adelaide Oval on Tuesday night.

The prolific ball-winner earned 12 votes to finish just outside of the top ten, five votes clear of young teammate Harrison Wigg, who impressed with seven votes in a breakout SANFL season.

Strong-marking utility Jonathon Beech, who bagged seven goals in Adelaide’s Semi-Final win over South Adelaide, was Adelaide’s next-best player on six votes.

Sturt captain Zane Kirkwood was the runaway winner of the count after polling 24 votes, which included five best-on-ground performances, to seal his second Magarey Medal.

Woodville-West Torrens recruit Nick O’Brien (19 votes) was runner-up, with teammates Jared Petrenko and James Boyd sharing third place with Port Adelaide’s Kane Mitchell on 18 votes.

Magarey Medal: Round by round

One of the hot favourites leading into the event, Ellis-Yolmen got off to a perfect start, polling three votes in Adelaide’s 74-point thumping of reigning premier West Adelaide in the opening round.

Riley Knight was a surprise packet through the early rounds. The hard-running half-forward earned two votes in the Round One victory over the Bloods, and was adjudged best afield for his four-goal performance against Port Adelaide in Mannum in Round Two.

No Crow polled in Round Three despite the Club’s 43-point win over Woodville-West Torrens.

Hugh Greenwood claimed his first Magarey Medal votes with three for his standout 22-possession and three-goal game against Glenelg, while tough onballer Wigg also claimed his maiden Magarey votes with best-on-ground honours in the come-from-behind win over North Adelaide in Round Seven.

Brad Crouch made a mini run with five votes from three games through Rounds Nine to 11, including a three-vote game from 37 disposals and seven clearances in the 47-point victory over the Redlegs.

Ellis-Yolmen claimed back-to-back two-vote matches in Rounds 14 and 15, where opposition players took top honours in losing teams.

Development player Scott Spriggs from Scotch OC earned his first Magarey Medal votes in just his fifth match for the Club following his impressive 26-possession game against the Roosters in Round 14.

Ellis-Yolmen notched his second three-vote game of the night after his match-winning performance in the SANFL Showdown win at Alberton in Round 18, while Jonathon Beech and Wigg added to their tallies three-vote games in the latter stages of the count.

Perennial vote-getter Mitch Grigg was surprisingly overlooked until he earned two votes in the penultimate round.

Earlier in the evening, Adelaide’s inaugural Club Doctor Dr Brian Sando was inducted into the South Australian Football Hall of Fame.
