Crows stand-in captain Tom Doedee has been ruled out of Saturday’s clash with North Melbourne at Metricon Stadium.
Doedee reported hamstring discomfort in last week’s loss to Essendon and with a six-day break and the upcoming fixture compression, the Crows opted against risking the defender.
"Tommy Doedee will miss (this week), we don't want to take a risk there coming off a long term injury," Nicks said.
"He's up and running and has had a solid week, but a six day break, it's just not worth risking Tom.
"Whether we look at a 10-day break for him, he might come in for Melbourne... we'll have to wait and see."
With skipper Rory Sloane still on the sidelines, Brodie Smith has been given the captaincy duties against the Kangaroos.
The 28-year-old was Adelaide’s best player in Round Eight, finishing with 24 disposals, 10 inside 50s and 705 metres gained.
"Smith was unanimously voted by our group," Nicks said.
"Fantastic character so he'll step up and take the role."
Adelaide’s final 22 for Saturday’s clash will be announced at 5.50pm ACST on Friday.
