Crows outgunned in the west
Freo stunned the Crows with six straight second-quarter goals to set up a 56-point win at Subiaco
Adelaide briefly challenged but faded in the second half as Freo won 17.16 (118) to 9.8 (62).
The Crows entered the clash with fitness clouds over Bernie Vince and Andrew McLeod and without Jason Porplyzia, Brett Burton and Chris Knights, there were few winners.
Scott Thompson (23 touches) worked hard in the centre square, while Taylor Walker booted four goals, but disappointed coach Neil Craig said the side was a fair way off where it needed to be.
“A fair bit of it can't be excused from what I saw,” Craig said. “The second quarter has nothing to do with personnel, structure or that sort of thing, I didn’t like it at all - we need to tidy up on that.
“There were some reasonable signs in the first and third quarters, but a pretty disappointing night for us.”
Goals were hard to come by early, but not for lack of effort, the game starting at break-neck pace with both sides running hard and in numbers off half-back.
Chris Mayne was a constant forward target for Fremantle, but missed his first two gettable shots on goal before opening his side’s account after 20 minutes.
When playing forward, Kurt Tippett had been well-held by Chris Tarrant, but the powerful forward kicked the Crows' first for the second half as his side went on to kick three of four goals in its best spell.
When Thompson kicked his second consecutive goal the margin had been dragged back to 17 points, but Fremantle steadied to take a 25-point lead into the final term before slamming on five unanswered goals.
